Sand volcanoes

Today, our playgroup built sand volcanoes. It was a lot of fun and very easy to do. First, you make a mound in the sand. Next, you get the bottom part of a plastic Easter egg and push it into the top of the mound. Ta-da, your very own sand volcano! To set it off, Jasmine spooned baking soda into each egg shell for all the kids. I got the food coloring package that comes with four colors so the kids chose different colors to drop into their eggs. Then the kids were given a cup of vinegar and we started the countdown.

5-4-3-2-1! GO!

We actually did it a few times. Sean and I accidentally discovered an amazing effect when I had placed blue food coloring into the egg and topped it with baking soda. Sean didn’t know I had already added the blue so he squeezed yellow on top and then placed another layer of baking soda on it. When we set the volcano off, it was yellow but then it turned blue. It was so cool he started layering all the colors in his egg.

Here is the sand at the end of the playgroup. Pretty…

  1. The dinosaurs seem to be taking the volcano activity pretty lightly… That’s what got them the first time around, too…
