Getting to the heart of the matter…

Yesterday, I wrote about how we made some nutty boats. They look pretty simple to make, I mean, you just crack the walnut in half, drip some candle wax in, and then stick a toothpick flag into it. The problem is: It’s really hard to get the walnut to crack in half to make two perfect little boats! The technique that finally worked for me was to insert the tip of a steak knife into the bottom of the walnut then by a rocking motion, slowly rock the knife deeper and deeper into the walnut until it cuts through the middle and came apart. Sometimes, only one side of the walnut was intact. But if you do this correctly, you might get to see a special sight, the walnut’s beautiful, perfectly shaped heart.
