We <3 Rainbows

On June 1st, 2009, President Barack Obama proclaimed June to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender pride month. We made a rainbow collage to celebrate. Sean, coincidentally, just happened to be wearing beads during the project.

1) Tear different colored construction paper. Sean could tear the big pieces but I had to make a tear mark for the smaller pieces.

2) Place glue and use one color at a time. You can see I used the ROY G. BIV model though we had no purple for the indigo/violet color. He placed one at a time and when there was a space in between the pieces, I would put a dot of glue and he would place a piece on it.

This took three sessions because the picture was so big and Sean got tired of doing it. When he did the last two colors, he just grabbed a handful of pieces and mushed pushed it on the glue. I had to shake the paper to get the ones that didn’t touch glue off the paper and I had him fill in the spaces. The final masterpiece:

We had some extra pieces so I had him make two small cards which he enjoyed doing much more than this huge artwork. We also glued on some cotton balls on the bottom for clouds. I did not instruct him as much and they came out beautifully just not evenly or as connected. That’s one thing about art with kids, you never know how much to help and how much to let go so that it becomes their artwork. I need to work on it.

  1. We did this project today since Chiu came home early today, and I had some time with the girls. The best part is that the girls know the colors in order now. Bonus!! 🙂
