Backyard Letter Wall

There’s a very cute preschool in Leander called The Good Earth Day School that we love to visit. They are Waldorf inspired so they are very play based and connected to nature and the community. They have wonderful classrooms and a petting zoo but Sean’s favorite thing about that school is the collection of wooden letters they have affixed to their back fence. Here is a picture of Sean walking down the fence touching the letters at the school:

He also loves to see the video of himself touching all the letters. It’s a really long video not just because it took him so long to touch the letters but their “X” is missing and he stands in the place where the X should be asking why it’s not there.

Since those letters at the school makes him so happy, I thought we could make similar letters at home and put them up in our backyard. I gave Sean some fat popsicle sticks and had him make letters with them. Then I used a glue gun to put them together. Finally, Sean and I painted the letters.

The painting took a while because I also painted the back of the letters. I decided to place them at Sean’s level so he can touch them. Fortunately, my back fence provided a ledge that was just the right height. I was able to lean the letters on the ledge and the ones that needed support, I hammered a nail into the fence so it can hang or lean against it. I didn’t want to hammer the nails into the letters because it has been raining a lot and I am not sure the popsicle sticks could withstand the harsh weather. This way, we can take them in if it’s going to rain (or snow, hey, it happened last year).

Here is Sean spotting his favorite letter:

And he had to check… Yes, we do have an X!
