UP costumes

This was my costume for Halloween. I was the house in the movie, UP, and my son, Zack, was Wilderness Explorer, Russell. I had two cardboard boxes and using some pictures I printed from the internet, started cutting and folding the form of the house. To have the pieces stay in place, I used clear packing tape.

The clear tape was strong enough to hold the sculpture in place but the paint I had planned to use would not adhere to the tape. Instead, I had to cut pieces of foam and glue gun them onto the box. I started my costume a week before Halloween and having two kids around made it hard to finish it. If I had more time, I would make a hose for the porch and add the blue trim. To wear the costume, I had two holes cut out on the sides of the box for my arms and left an opening at the top of the box for my head and used tape to fashion myself some suspenders. You can tell by the top picture that it is very hard to carry a baby around when you make a costume from a cardboard box.

To make Zack’s Wilderness Explorer costume, I just used a yellow shirt and made a sash using brown felt. I printed pictures of real Boy Scout badges and glued them to tiny buttons. I left one space for his Assisting the Elderly badge in reference to the movie. I made the backpack from an orange bag we had around the house and attached a few things such as binoculars, a play frying pan, etc. It weighed the backpack down a lot so he didn’t like wearing it.

I enjoyed making the costumes but next year, whatever I make, the top priority will be comfort.
