Halloween Diorama

Two weeks ago, we went to a pumpkin patch and picked out a nice round pumpkin for carving. My mistake was to carve it when we got home which resulted in a moldy mess five days later. We bought another pumpkin and I had planned to carve it closer to Halloween and the next thing you know, it was Halloween and the pumpkin was still sitting there. I remembered seeing this woodland diorama in a pumpkin and thought that was the perfect last minute pumpkin carving idea. Sean has been playing with his dinosaurs in his sand pit lately so I thought we could do a dinosaur diorama together.

I prepared the pumpkin first by cutting out a window and gutting it. Next, Sean helped me scoop some sand for the bottom of the pumpkin. The slightly moist sand made it easier to put things in place. I cut out a volcano shape and stuck it to the back of the pumpkin and place a candle behind it. Next, I used a small tupperware sauce container to make a watering hole for the dinosaurs. We placed rocks around the water hole so you can’t really see it in the pictures. Then, Sean and I placed the trees and rocks and dinosaurs. I thought there were too many dinosaurs in the diorama but Sean wanted to keep packing in more and more. We hung a pteranodon over the watering hole and I picked some patches of grass from the backyard and stuck them in the sand and held them in place with the rocks. It was fun making the scene with Sean and I am glad he was more involved than when I just carve a pumpkin by myself.
